Chelsea host Manchester City tomorrow afternoon in a crucial Premier League clash. We may only be eight games into the season, but a result here for either side could stand them in good stead for the rest of the campaign.
Both sides come into this game off the back of some impressive results; the Blues recovered from a nightmare start against Cardiff City last week, eventually dispatching the Bluebirds 4-1, and secured a fantastic away win in the Champions League in mid-week, handsomely beating German side Schalke 3-0.
City meanwhile went to Upton Park and produced an attacking master-class, tearing apart a usually solid West Ham United back-line with their astute passing, patient build-up play and impeccable movement. They followed up that 3-1 victory with an excellent result in the Champions League, beating CSKA Moscow on their own patch 2-1.
Both clubs have found early season form, in large part thanks to the performances of their star men. Chelsea have looked strong since the first whistle, but it’s taken some time for their strike force to really make a significant impact. Fernando Torres once again showed flashes of his former self in mid-week, but Blues fans have seen this all before; they’ll be hoping he can carry that kind of performance into the league week-in and week-out.
The same can’t be said about the City attacking threat; their key men up top have looked sharp right from the get-go. It may have something to do with the sheer number of quality forwards now at the club; if you want to stay in the starting line-up, you have to play out of your skin and make an impact. Or it might be to do with the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini, whose approach to the game is the polar opposite to former manager Roberto Mancini. Either way, they are one of the most dangerous sides in the league at the present moment.
It’s not all been plain sailing though for either side; Chelsea and City have suffered from some defensive howlers in these opening games, with the latter especially suffering thanks to Joe Hart’s loss of form.
This is a tough game to call, but with both sides seemingly beginning to fire on all cylinders it should be a hell of a contest. However, I think City might just edge it

MOURINHO SPEAKS ABOUT CHELSEA AND MAN CITY
The cash-rich clubs of Chelsea and Manchester City are necessary for football to continue to survive, according to Blues boss Jose Mourinho.
Earlier this season, Mourinho described the likes of City, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain as “economic sharks”.
The Blues have been ‘sharks’ in the past when Roman Abramovich took over at Stamford Bridge but have fallen behind the French duo and the Citizens in spending power but Mourinho accepts the situation.
“Football needs sharks,” Mourinho said.
“Football needs investment, they need people that love the game and wants to make from smaller clubs bigger clubs.”
Asked what sort of shark Chelsea are, Mourinho said: “A clever one. The shark that knows when to attack and how to attack.”
This was shown Chelsea moved to sign Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala for a reported fee of £30million, despite the Brazil forward already having undergone a medical with Tottenham.
The signing shows Chelsea still have the financial muscle to challenge for the leading players, even when City are spending in the region of £100million without recouping anything.
Asked if Chelsea are able to spend a similar sum, without bringing money in, Mourinho said: “I don’t know. I don’t care.”
Chelsea are no longer spending £100m in transfer windows to comply with financial fair play.
“I’m happy that it’s not (unlimited spending),” Mourinho added.
“I accept the way it is. I’m happy with the way it is. “I came to Chelsea to work following a certain philosophy and I’m more than happy with the support that the board and the owner have on my team. I’m more than happy with that.”
UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations will not be enforced until next season and Mourinho hopes European football’s governing body act firmly when the time comes.
“The rules are for everybody,” he added.
“I’m not saying City aren’t following the rules. I don’t know. I speak about Chelsea, I don’t speak about City.
“Chelsea has changed a lot and Chelsea has changed thinking that Financial Fair Play is going to be in practice.
“Chelsea want UEFA to rule the situation and to fine if somebody’s not doing the same.”
Mourinho sees a bit of himself in Roberto Mancini after they were both sacked soon after ending both side’s long wait for the league.
“I did after 50 (years) and I was the same,” said Mourinho, referring to his September 2007 exit from Stamford Bridge.
And Mourinho thinks replacement Manuel Pellegrini is having a natural progression by his side’s defensive fallibility.
“If they have a little problem here and there, it’s a natural consequence of a new manager,” he said.
“Like us, we are not a perfect team. Manchester United are not a perfect team. “Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, they have better conditions to have a better start, to be more compact and closer to the managers’ ideas.
“I don’t need to defend Pellegrini, Pellegrini doesn’t need to defend me, (but) it’s not easy to start with a new team

VERMAELEN CONSIDERING ARSERNAL EXIT
The Belgium international lost his place in the Gunners' starting
line-up last season following a dip in form, with Arsenal manager Arsene
Wenger preferring a centre-back partnership of Per Mertesacker and
Laurent Koscielny.
Vermaelen has continued to find himself on the bench this season - and the Belgian now admits he will consider leaving in January if the situation continues in order to boost his chances of going to next summer's World Cup finals in Brazil.
"People ask me if I panic because I'm not playing a lot but I'm not.
"I have spoken to the manager but it will remain private between us. Things can happen in a split second and change my situation. That can happen tomorrow or next weekend. In that case, we will speak differently in January. I have to be ready for that."
Vermaelen has featured in just one Premier League match for the Gunners this season - as a substitute against Sunderland - while his only other appearance came in the Capital One Cup.
He was also left out of Belgium's starting line-up for last Friday's crucial 2014 World Cup qualifier against Croatia.

be the ideal situation for me to go to the World Cup, that's for sure."People ask me if I panic because I'm not playing a lot but I'm not.

SIR ALEX:MAN UTD MUST BACK MOYE
SIR ALEX has sent a warning to Manchester United successor David Moyes that the key to success at Old Trafford is harmony throughout the club, especially in hard times.
The Red Devils currently sit in ninth place in the Premier League table, with the 50-year-old enduring an unspectacular start to life at the club, but the recently retired Ferguson was keen to stress the importance of pulling together.
"Three things are very important when you are working with them [coaching staff] - work ethic, loyalty, philosophy," said the former United boss at the 10th Uefa Coach Education Workshop in Budapest.
"You all have to be singing the same tune, no matter how bad the tune is. It’s important that your people agree with you and the way that we at United wanted to play, that was very important."
Ferguson, who was famed for his 'hairdryer treatment' during his 26 years in charge of United, says he was forced to tame his temper in the latter stages of his career.
"The human beings I've dealt with are far more fragile than the human beings of 30 years ago," he added.
"And I say that in a good sense because they're coming from better conditions. I couldn't lose my temper the way I did back then with people nowadays.
"Sometimes it's about inspiring to make players better than they are and the best that they could have been."
